Well the weather was awesome for Pride today, and a good time was had by our crew, but I end the day with very mixed feelings. I definitely was bummed by the d-bag preachers with the PA-system...though it was fun to watch the Dykes on Bykes drown them out with their vroooma-vroom-vroom. They couldn't seem to decide if they loved us, condemned us, or felt pity for us as they waffled between guilt-trip moaning and finger-pointing accusations (did you know we are all abominations and child molesters? True fax.) However walking right through the hypocrites' midst hand-in-hand with my friends felt good too, and soon they were out of earshot.

I went this year with the recent teen suicides riding along in my heart and though I saw plenty of "good" churches represented in the parade, I still felt the echoes of the abuse I suffered growing up in the fold of bible-thumping loonies and the society that supports them. Thank you @ssh0le street preacher for reminding me that my battle is not over, and that there are others who need to hear that they are not alone and you and your ilk are not all that there is. You are not in control, and your truth is not everyone's truth.

You are dinosaurs, we are the meteor. Hurry up and go extinct already.

So, I didn't go to Pride this year.  I told other people about it and encouraged some to go, and even thought about it a couple times, but ultimately decided to be there in spirit instead.  I still gayed it up some this weekend - went for a group bear haircut at Crazy Dave's, looked at books with hawt menz in them at the bookstore and shot 10 dozen pics of a hawt bear here at the Manse

I read through a lot of blog entries about people's Super Fun Happy Pride Festival! weekend and a lot of "those fags were probably sour" posts by the "too cool to wear a rainbow sticker" crowd.

I know everyone can't attend or might not enjoy such an event but I'm glad those of you who went had a good time (assuming you had a good time) and I wish the "Bah Homobug" crowd would get out and live a little.

I've gone to Pride plenty of times - gone through my "ZOMG other gay peepulz!!!!!1" phase, my "fuck the establishment homo activism" phase, my "this parade is soooo tired and what the hell is she wearing?" phase, my "found something better to do and it was too hot anyway" phase and finally  to my "wow, I can't believe I was away so long, check it out" phase of the last couple years. I'll certainly be back - I find being obligated to go helps - running the booth made me bother to slog down there from out in the burbs and hang out all day - which was great because then I could actually see what I was missing when I was at the house hiding in the AC and internets.

I can't say I would consider myself proud to be gay - I don't feel like it's some special achievement, just an accident of birth or some quirk of development I couldn't have really been cognizant of at the time - but I'm certainly not ashamed of it - and while I don't seethe with anger that everyone in the universe doesn't value my fabulosity like I did in college - I don't put up with any shit about it either - I can still shoot a betch down with a snappy zinger when need be.  I'm glad that I am at a point in my life when being gay is not the end-all-be-all of existence, but it can be enjoyed and valued in its expression - even if that is very matter of fact.  We might not need to be proud *that* we lurves the c0xxorz  but we can still be proud of *how* we lurves it. ;)

I can remember when I would have been petrified to read magazines like Out or Advocate or A Bear's Life in the store for fear someone would know I was a homo! Oh noes!  I can remember when the only time I really felt safe to be gay out loud in public was at Pride, or maybe a bar.  The internets have totally turned that around and for the better - Gen Y, thank your lucky ISP's you don't have to take out an ad in the newspaper or drive an hour to some skanky dive bar to talk to another faggot.

I chatted with some boys this weekend that are fresh off the gay turnip truck, so to speak - and even with the internet at their command, they still lived in fear or being found out, of family reprisal, of "catching AIDS" from any form of intimate contact with a man. One of them, a Clinton-era  virgin asked me if he should get tested.  One of them asked me (meaning where in Atlanta) "where do I go to be gay?"

Well kid, you start right in front of that monitor you're staring at - the one on which you are asking to see my cock shots and show me your butt on cam.  You start by calling up AID Atlanta and getting some real information on STD's so you can wisely make choices  - stop risking your health and life wantonly and stop freaking out over the simplest and safest contacts with other men.  You start by contacting YouthPride. You start by heading into town so your folks won't see and you go to the bookstore and the library and the park and yes...to the Pride Festival.

And you start by asking someone who has been there, which you've done.  Good first step, keep going.  I got your back.

My friend Randy and I decided not to do the booth this year due to expense-to-work-to-payoff ratio with just the two of us (couldnt seem to find a steady third, you know how *that* can be).

So now I am wide open (not THAT way) for the weekend, anyone got any plans or want to make some?

Well another Pride has come and gone - and in spite of the horrible weather and the puzzling decision to close the events down early each day, I still had a great time, made some good connections (networking! :P), did a lot of marketing, and turned a halfway decent profit! Woohoo!

Considering how a lot of other vendors fared, I am not complaining!

Randy, Ed, Julie, and I thank all of you who stopped by, rubbed or unrubbed. ;)

I of course saw half the gay universe over the weekend, and I won't attempt an orgy of LJ tags right now, maybe later for posterity. ;)

Special thanks (and Profunditeer rank promotions) to my beloved pup Lt. Mark [profile] vernal_vices for his kind offer of lodging during the weekend and also to up-and-coming contender-cub  Ensign Piper [profile] mad_piper for providing various other necessary services during the same. ;)

Some pics are up in my gallery - including
THIS GUY (clickie for biggie)

Maybe more later, but this week is gonna be hella busy and I'll do good just to do a bullet list!

Clickie for biggie!

More pics and plenty to talk about, but first I have to go fetch Chamberlain Nate [profile] mindchaos from the airport!

Alrighty...cyclone winds blowing down half the park...check. Baking heat melting the duct tape off the tent...check. Torrential rain and lightning all night...check. Today should be the meteor strike. LOL

Actually it looks and sounds pretty quiet out there this morning...Did a lot of networking and marketing yesterday which is awesome...picked up a few table sessions for post-Pride -yay! Yesterday was ok business wise but since everyone saw how successful my booth was last year, we have a lot of competition this year.

So today we're 'bout to bring it. Go go guerilla massage team!

P.S. If I never hear the word "uterus" again it will be too soon. I'll explain later.

...before a big wind would try to blow them all away. The weather turned nasty at the Park today and the main stage was collapsed by wind...also a lot of tents were damaged, thankfully not anything on our row. Just wanted to let you know the Bear Paws Massage Team is all accounted for and unscathed.

Hopefully no one was hurt and they can get things put back together for the rest of the weekend.

D-day is tomorrow...Myself, Randy and our friends will be at Piedmont Park setting up the Bear Paws Massage booth - we'll be there by 3pm, market hours are 5pm - 9pm :) Come see us!

Just a lil blurb about Pride (This weekend - June 23rd-25th) - Bear Paws Massage (Myself and some dear friends) will be back in the same booth as last year  (P-35  - Purple Row over near the 12th street gate), and will be dispensing both chair and table massages for your sore and tired feet, shoulders, backs, and necks (as well as icy cool goodies for your hot and sweaty faces)!

We'll be open Friday 5pm -9pm, Saturday 11am - 9pm, and Sunday 11am - 8pm!

Come and get it!

profundis: (Hmm...)
Anyone out there live near or relatively near Piedmont Park and would be willing to host me and my truck (truck staying put all weekend, me really only around at night) for Pride Weekend - Jun 23-25?

With the road construction and the regular traffic for Pride, it will *really* suck if I have to come in from Cobb every day.  I have a bud that will pick me up in the mornings, as long as I can get a place to sleep and take a shower I'm golden.

This quest comes with a Profunditeer promotion and a massage from moi  - just not during the weekend, I'll be worn out already!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. My own bed. That's better. And I got to see my Houndie this mornin', yay!

Had an awesome weekend, saw sooooo many people and made about 2.5 times my investment, not to mention the networking and marketing - plus I just had a damn good time! My calves and feet are still pretty sore...at least I think I will be able to walk today thanks to the kindness of a couple o' my pups. ;) Anyone else want to rub them for me, don't be shy!

Thanks again to Ensign Mark [livejournal.com profile] ginkgocubb for playing hostess with the mostess!

**************

a few random thoughts from the weekend:

300,000 to 3. I felt kinda sorry for the bible-thumpers camped out at the gate to the park. Is that the best you can do?! Let's try it again with a little *faith* in it this time! Pathetic!

My Spanish accent is terrible! I speak like I'm wading through molasses and can barely glean the gist from the speech of a native speaker. Must sharpen up.

Nothing quite compares to the thrill of hearing the parade enter the park from the far side...the triumphant and jubilant roar echoing through the trees like an oncoming barbarian horde...makes the hair on your arms and neck stand on end.

Getting to know someone whose first language is ASL is both intimidating and intriguing. Lucky for me I communicate so much via touch and expression.

Best Hug of the Weekend Award goes to: Cadet Will [livejournal.com profile] beartard. Runner-up goes to my buddy (and former massage tutor, Randy)
