Well, to be honest I was not even excited about going to see The Dark Knight Rises because the trailers made it all just look like a retread of S.W.A.T. or some brainless, heartless shoot-em-up with armored cars. I was SO WRONG. It was quite engaging, even affecting, in spite of some jumbly bits that made it obvious Nolan had really wanted to tell another story but alas, poor Heath.

Darn you Michael Caine for making me teary-eyed at a comic book movie! He totally stole every scene he was in, and that's in a movie with MORGAN FREEMAN in it! Although come to think of it I don't remember them being in any scenes together...

If you can get over the fact that they seemed to have cast Deckard Cain from Diablo to be Bane's voice, the film is really quite good and takes some unexpected turns and has fun nods to the previous films.

to [livejournal.com profile] joeydiablo  and non-LJ Jim for hosting SciFi Friday last weekend. [livejournal.com profile] geekhound , the Varmint and I went and had a good time watching Dollhouse and BSG with [livejournal.com profile] atomicdave and the assembled crew.

Hot whore-dervs were also served and consumed con mucho gusto! Muchas gracias, Jose!

...lunch at the Cheesecake Fact-o-ry....!

Had a wunnerful time with my gaming group (and some additional nearest and dearest) yesterday in spite of my hacking and general malaise (oh, kennel cough, how you mock me) - hope I didn't give it to anyone!  Thanks to all involved for the lovely cards, prezzies and yummy food!

Then we gamed and had a good time - and all their characters lived - yay!

Then my energy flagged and I hadda go home take a buncha cold meds and go sleep!

...and it was a perfect antidote to the holiday clamor and pablum we all marinate in from Halloween to New Year's.  Thank you, Tim Burton for releasing this today.

Oh sure they left out a few things I wish they had left in, and left in a few I wish they'd left out, and Bonham-Carter is NOT. ANGELA. LANSBURY (*lament*) but that simply has to be ok, it can't always be her.

I'm glad they brought it to a new audience and it looked great.  Depp actually has a nice voice, even if he came off a little like Adam Ant from Hell.  It did make me want to go home and listen to my Broadway version (which I am) but from nostalgia, not to erase the memory of this film version. ;)

Go see it!

The Mist.

The Profunditeer formerly known as monarchprime went to see Stephen King's The Mist today. I have waited 20 years for this movie to be made to see things on-screen that captivated and creeped me out when in print. A lot of my sensibilities when it comes to horror movies and comcsics and gaming owe much to the original novella.

King movies are usually total steaming flops or amazingly classic (to me, it seems). This one was so faithful to the spirit and letter of the novella that I was completely transfixed and thrilled right up until...

And really, what do you expect from Stephen King? A *happy* ending?

Hung out for a bit with the Bears On The Run boys last night. It was wunnerful as always to visit with Kendall [personal profile] thereisnofear and Bob [profile] bobaloo and I was pleased to see that Formerly Wayward Cub Josh [profile] babyirishcub was along for the trip. It was also good to officially meet Matthew Temple, Elijah Black and Shannon [profile] plaghs as we hadn't really had a chance to connect at the Bear Jams I'd been too.

I have to work all day today so when they were ready to hit the bars I bid them adieu and saw them off to the Durty Burd. I hope they had fun and didn't get too lost (they all have good senses of direction, they're all just pointing different ways)!

Their show tonight at the Amsterdam starts at 7pm and should run til about 10 or so. I won't be making the beginning of it but I'm gonna head down after work if I get out in time. Go see them!

I feel like there is so much I could be posting if only I wasn't so busy living it or juggling things around so that I *can* live it.

Working at the school at least 3 days a week, the doctor office 2 days and the spa and my private practice when they come up.

Hung out with [profile] joeydiablo and his sweetie Jim in their new digs

Surprise visit from [personal profile] jefferzephyr this weekend made for a fun night at Woof's with [profile] mad_piper , [profile] mdmcquaig, JP and his pals from MS.

Piper, Rob (formerly monarchprime) and I did lunch at HQ, then browsed Borders, went to see the Simpsons movie today (it was ok - a few LOL moments but really no better or worse than the show).
profundis: (I'll get you my pretty...)

The new Harry Potter movie was a good time, it seemed to just fly by. I don't read the books so I don't care about all the little things that aren't the same in the movies. In the last few movies it has been obvious that there was more going on than could be crammed into even a 2.5 hour movie, but alas, LOTR was the same way. I would have liked to see more of some old favorite supporting characters but there was a lot of main plot and action to deal with in this one, and I'm ok that the director spent more time on it - it kept the pace going nicely.

This is apparently the installment where the shit goes down at Hogwarts and the kids have had enough, which warms the Libertarian cockles of my heart. Rules are great until they are used to manipulate, suppress, oppress and destroy. Then some ass gon' be kicked. Revolutiamus!

It was good to hang out with my chica numero uno, Imperial Sister[personal profile] journiey , even if she can't help but stage whisper at the screen when mean people do bad things or good people do the right thing. ;) Thanks for the birfday present, Sis...it was worth the wait :)

Magister Rob [profile] monarchprime joined us for pre-movie dinner and Narty mindchaos/ [info]giles13 were slated to see the movie with us but our location was sold out and they dint get their tickets soon enough I guess. I hope they got to see it somewhere else.

Well we sucked at trivia last night, and not in the way that we are all so good at.  Apparently the brains of the outfit were off somewhere gambling and otherwise sinning

We did have a nice time hanging out though...got an early start to that: lunch and Die Hard 4 (quite good as diverting eye-candy) with Lt. Cmdr John [profile] johnspiff , Chamberlain Nate [profile] mindchaos & Man-At-Arms Marty [profile] giles13 (or Narty, as Bryan and Blake like to refer to them.  Hmm, catchy).

Then we met up with Magister Rob [profile] monarchprime, Supreme Cub [profile] mad_piper, and Lt. Cmdr. Mark [profile] vernal_vices at Willy's where we proceeded to stink up the game.  Ensign Kim johnjohn20 come home, we need you!

Finally most of us made it back over to the Manse so that we could pop Piper's Girls Will Be Girls cherry, a fun time was had by all.

Nice evening out with the boys, as [profile] hitopcub  and [profile] bryan_atl  joined [profile] giles13  and I out at Woofs and then [profile] vernal_vices  met us all at HQ ( Marietta Diner) for some yummy late dinner.

Marty [livejournal.com profile] giles13 and I are figna go to Woof's in a bit, he hasn't seen teh barz in town yet, so I figger that's a good place to start. Anyone care to meet us?

Took [profile] vernal_vices to see the new WWE flick "The Condemned" this evening.  I had passes I'd gotten at the comic shop and we both agreed that for for free, it was better than having our eyes gouged out with rusty spoons.  Steve Austin is lookin mighty fine though, and seeing him in jeans and a t-shirt is a big improvement over this standard dorkwear that wrestlers usually sport.  He was all hot and butch and gruff and stuff but it's hard to take him seriously when he's whomping on people after seeing how sweet and gentle he is (I was on a cruise once that some of the WWF guys were on - and stalk- I mean happened to observe him around the pool with his little girl).  Awwwwwww. Horf.

Which is what poor Mark nearly did.  We had to sit way up close to the front and there was so much camera motion than the poor bairn got a wee bit motion sick.  He was so rattled that when on the way home when we were discussing how this movie compared to "300" I was able to pull the following over on him:

Me: "I heard they were making a sequel [to 300] next year."

He: "Really? What's it gonna be called?"

*pause while I try to keep from laughing*

Me:"301."

He: "Really?"

Me: "No, I'm kidding."

He: "Oh."

Me: (deadpan) "Actually it's gonna be called 301 Dalmatians."

He: "Really?"

Me: (starting to lose it) "Yeah cause they're from Dalmatia."

He: "Are you...?"

Me:  "Yeah I'm kidding again."

Lulz!  Love ya, pup!

Went to see the Decemberists tonight at the Tabernacle with Lt. Mark[livejournal.com profile] vernal_vices!  Their sound has gotten a lot more rock-influenced but they are still very talented musicians and it was fun to watch them interact with the crowd and each other.

The giant killer whale puppet "eating" the band mid-song in one of their numbers was a nice touch.

And no, I don't mean Yahoo, AIM or MSN.

Went to see The Messengers today with my mom and we had a great time clamping onto each other for dear life.  It was fuckin' *scary*, and I have a high standard for scary movies.  It wasn't just "startle-horror" (the cat that suddenly jumps yowling out of the dark corner, etc) and it wasn't just creepy atmospheric horror (though I am getting a little tired of every horror movie looking like it was shot by the DP of NIN's "Closer").  It was a nice blend of suspense and shock and disturbing images.

The acting was a little cookie-cutter, almost as if everyone were playing horror movie archetypes on purpose rather than simply *being* horror movie archetypes, with the exception of the protagonist, a troubled teen girl.  There were still plenty of "what are they thinking?! Don't go in there! Time to pack up and move!" moments but the pacing was good - not too fast not too slow and the audio was phenomenal.  I had the urge to check the rear corners of the cinema for ooky stuff.

It even had a little "hit home" stuff for mom and I, though I don't know how much of that would apply to most folks. It isn't so much that you see the end coming, as that it makes perfect sense that you do.

All in all, a good combo of disturbing/creepy concept and visuals with suspense/thriller/startle stuff (and no cats!).  [profile] sunflower1969 should go see it just for the fields of sunflowers. ;)

Well NYE started out pretty good with a new haircut, a photo shoot (shhh! It's a secret - til February), and a rubbin' for Lt. Scotty [personal profile] psifire but then it quickly went downhill and in spite of the kind invitation of the Cobb Cubs to hang out with them, for the first time since I can recall I didn't do a damn thing for NYE and went to bed early.

Today was better, Contender Cub [profile] mad_piper took me to brunch at HQ and then we hung out with the Bear Bunch and got ice cream.  Mmmm, lactose intolerant yumminess *gurgle*.

If all goes according to projections we will get Cadet Josh [profile] babyirishcub's car situation take care of tomorrow (yay!  thanks to all of you that helped out!).

Those of you who are writing letters for me consider this a gentle reminder to finish them or please clean out your spare rooms. ;)

This last couple weeks has been a tumultous blur, not all of it bad mind you, but super full and crazy and not just with holiday goings-on.

I don't think I could even remember every detail now, much less type it all up but the rundown is this:

  • CadetJosh [livejournal.com profile] babyirishcub  is still struggling to keep a roof over his head, food in his belly and his car operable so he can get to work.  Some progress has been made, and there is help offered that I am just waiting until the timing is right to implement.  Thank you so much to those who have offered and given help so far, even moral support.
  • Mom is much better, she came home Wed nite and I cooked a pre-emptive Christmas Dinner (on Yule, how ironic) for the immediate family, while she supervised.  So now I know how to make her awesome cornbread dressing, mmm!  Luckily the house had already been decorated (much earlier than normal, she must have had an inkling) so it was still a festive -- if somewhat subdued -- event.  Now if she can just get over the cold she picked up in the hospital, she'd be well on her way to recovery.  She has to watch her diet a lot because of the meds she is on for 6 months.  Many thanks again to those who have asked about her and kept me from going off the deep end that first couple of scary days.  *muaaaah*
  • Contender Cub gifted me with a groovy new (for me) larger TV so now we won't all have to squint quite so much on movie nights here. Thanks, Piper!
  • Had some fun social times (movies, gaming, dining, etc) with Magister Rob [livejournal.com profile] monarchprime  and the Bear Bunch, and look forward to tomorrow's brunch and movie day for Christmas!  Yay!
  • Had my annual lunch and gift exchange with Danger Woman and kept my sanity (or was simply too crazy to notice any difference).
  • Attended my first school clinic supervisor meeting which went fine, and am set to start next Friday.
  • With the sad exception of the Silver Grill closing last Friday, things seem to be leveling out on the suckitude factor, which is a godsend.  This year can go douche with draino as far as I'm concerned.  Here's to 2007!

Had a good time out with Gene [livejournal.com profile] lespaceplie last night - got to enjoy my favorite vegetarian Indian / Southern soul-food place (and the good-natured ribbing of the proprietor) and a never-dull if not quite entirely fabulous show in Little Five Points (locus of all things alternagothindustreamo in ATL).

The two openers for Peaches were a disparate bunch. The first band, Whitey, was 5 white late-20 something guys, one of which at least must have been from the UK judging by his accent. They were not bad at all - kind of an emo lovechild of Devo and Gary Numan with some Berlin thrown in for good measure.

The second act - Quintron and Miss Pussycat was amazing in its sheer dorkosity. Guy in tacky white leiure suit (after Labor Day, no less!) behind a facade made to look like he was sitting in a Jeep (complete with working headlights) instead of behind his bizarre "instrument" and his backup "screecher" (I can't call her a singer). If Zappa wrote songs to be performed by Edgar Winter and sung by Danger Woman, that would have been about right for this act. Actually I think I'd have preferred Danger Woman. Gene and I used this time to get drinks, we needed them after a few minutes of skull-powderizing dissonance from the "Drum Buddy." Sonic Attack, anyone?

There were various tunes played between sets - rock, rap, pop, goth, etc...but the best was when Petula Clark's Downtown came on. Nothing brings the inner happy urban girl out of a grumpy looking goth guy like Pet Clark. I think everyone sang and waved their arms overhead to that one. LOL I had a moment of sheer joy remembering the last time I'd heard that song played in a darkened theatre full of weirdos (my people) - about 20 years ago (owch) at Fantasy Fair (remember that, kiddies?) as a transition between films in the Wolrd Congress Center. Ahhh.

Then it was time for Peaches

Gene reviewed her act quite well in his own post . I got a lot of pics but most of them sucked, I put up a few - clickie the piccie above for more. :)

Thanks, Gene!

Ok, that was definitely different. Just got home from touring the Netherworld haunted house attraction (actually 3 different attractions at the same place - Cursed, Shock-O-Rama, and the Freak Pit) with a gigantic group of bears. Lt.J.G. [livejournal.com profile] mad_piper  went with me and we both had fun (though he did scream like a girl a time or two). ;)

Our host with the most was Barry [livejournal.com profile] beelzecub , who got us all coupons and extra attention from the monsters since he works there. Cadet Eric [livejournal.com profile] bullkid  was along with the pack too, and a couple other LJ'ers but a ton of bear411ers (literally, at least a ton, more like 2 tons). I even saw Lt. J.G.Pete [livejournal.com profile] misterpeep  on the way out in his "Security Man in Black" garb.

Afterwards, Piper and I went on a nice midnight drive through some of the backstreets nearby and uh, appreciated the cool and quiet darkness. ;)

Whelp, Minister Randy [profile] lostncove has departed from the Imperial Compound in the conveyance of Ensign Cris [profile] slacker_x, and his hubby Tony, and they should be nearly to Chattanooga as I type.

It has been a full week: a good combo of mellow hang out time, laughing our asses off, running about town playing tourist/tour guide, meeting up with f riends, and gossiping about all you bitches!  Highlights included:
  • Dinner at Roxx with Cadet Mattison [profile] mashbyh and Lt. Cmdr McQ [profile] mdmcquaig
  • Visit to the Durty Burd
  • the hair-buzzing session
  •  "Teen Steam"
  • the trip to CNN Center / Centennial Olympic Park / Trader Vic's
  • visit from Contender Cub
  • a couple of rubbin's here and there
  • movie night at the Bear Commune TM
  • comics and dinner with Magister Rob [profile] knight2monarch
  • Silver Grill / Woof's with Cris and Tony last night (including the Hilarious Exclusionary Joke)

And I successfully avoided seeing Gymkata all week long!  AHHhahahahahaha!

Posted up some more pics into the Randy Visit gallery here or clickie the piccie.
New pics are at the bottom of page 1 and on page 2. :)

Safe travels, buddy!
